Networking is key to success, so long as you know how to create relationships. Use these 5 tips to network like a pro and enjoy every minute of it.

You’ve heard it before: networking is essential to your success.

So how can you successfully network so that you’re not just making acquaintances but you’re building and growing a network of relationships with people?

The biggest mistake people make when trying to network is to try and project a facade rather than truly engage with others.

It’s important to put your best foot forward, sure, but you also need to meaningfully connect with others if you want to build lasting relationships. Use these 5 tips to grow a strong network.

#1. Genuinely Enjoy Your Time With Others

If you’re shy, the idea of connecting with others might seem daunting. For others, a long list of to-do’s can make you feel like it’s just another task to be completed. In both cases, you’ll miss out on a great opportunity to connect with someone on a real level and get the most of the experience.

When you take the time to genuinely enjoy getting to know others, you open yourself to a world of new possibilities. You’re able to get more out of your interactions and build a real foundation.

And, of course, others can sense when you’re present and happy to be with them and will respond to you in kind, setting the tone for both of you to have a good time.

#2. Be Positive and Enthusiastic

One of the most important qualities you can offer to others is positivity and enthusiasm. Don’t be that person who insists on correcting others just because you have it another way in your mind. As you practice being positive and enthusiastic with others, you let go of judgement and create an open space to communicate.

You’d be surprised at just how much you can grow and learn when you drop the need to prove your point, and instead listen to others with the support that we all need.

#3. Keep it Fun

Just because you’re making a business connection, doesn’t mean you can’t bring the fun! Remember that you have a big impact on how your interactions are developed so keep it enjoyable for everyone. It’s only a chore to network if you view it in a strictly utilitarian sense, rather than an opportunity to meet someone new and enjoy yourselves in the process.

#4. Offer Help When Possible

If you have the chance to offer some sort of assistance to others, ACT ON IT! One of the key ways that you grow a successful network with real relationships is by helping others whenever you can. Whether it’s connecting them with another person in your network, helping with a task, sharing a resource – if someone asks you for help or brings a problem to you that you can solve, be the person who helps make it happen.

#5. Ask for Advice

Part of genuinely connecting with others is being able to ask for advice or a favour if that’s what you’re looking for. Don’t beat around the bush or drop hints. Be straightforward in an honest and direct way to give others the same opportunity to help you out if need be. Of course, you don’t want to follow an introduction with some outlandish request either.

Be sure to ask for advice firstly, especially if this other person is a specialist in their field, because their solution might not even be on your radar.

Networking can be fun, so long as you take the time to genuinely enjoy yourself and engage with others in an authentic way. Remember that your network gives you the opportunity to grow and expand to new horizons as a person, so make the most of your chances to meet with new people and learn new things.
