Emotional Intelligence is the most important factor in achievement, no matter what your background, experience or resources. This is because EI shows you how to connect with others, gain respect and achieve results.

No matter how educated or connected you are, there is nothing as powerful as EI to accomplish any personal or professional goal you have in life. People with high levels of EI know how to keep their cool, influence others to collaborate and ultimately, get results.

Once you know how to strengthen and apply EI skills in your professional and personal life, you’ll know how to bypass unconscious hot button triggers and instead lead others to achieve the goals you want.

Use the 5 tactics below to boost your EI and achieve.

1. Conscious Awareness

Conscious awareness is the first step to develop supercharged EI skills.

Conscious awareness of yourself, how your mind works and your unconscious triggers arms you with powerful ammunition to take control of your emotions and behaviour, consciously.

This is because, the more mindful you are of your triggers, the better you become at stopping emotional reactions from dictating your behaviour.

As you practice conscious awareness of your hot button triggers, remember nothing is an emergency.

Take “time-outs” instead of making knee-jerk reactions so you reflect on how your choices impact your future and those around you.

Once you slow down, you make an essential conscious choice to be your authentic self so you can experience what you truly desire with integrity and respect.

2. Act, Instead of ‘Re-Acting’

Words, issues, situations, and personalities all have triggers.

If you are reactive, you’ll tend to tune out, act out, shut down, distort, or judge what others are saying to you.

Instead, focus on listening so you can consciously act. On the other hand, people who act consciously slow down reactions in order to process information, gauge their response and strategically communicate with others.

Try to breathe while listening so you can force your brain to process situations more logically.

3. Communicate Effectively

The best leaders are effective communicators.

So how do you become an effective communicator and avoid being misperceived?

Remember that nothing pushes hot buttons faster than the feeling of being misunderstood or misperceived. When you’re speaking with others, your goal should not be to show ‘how you are right’, aim to communicate in ways that help your audience understand what you are saying

Train yourself to ask open-ended questions in an effort to establish good communication skills.

4. Be Open-Minded

In the willingness to open your mind, you may be surprised at what you learn about yourself and others around you.

The opportunities for growth and expansion available are exponential when you’re willing to learn, grow and open your mind.

Practice opening your mind to other points of views and new information to push past limits that hold you back. Being open-minded gives you the power to be coachable, approachable and grow to new heights.

5. Stay “On Point”

If you find yourself in a situation where your ego is triggered, you can lose track of facts and get caught up in ego battles.

In every situation, remember what your desired outcome is and stick to to point at hand. This is how you become strategic in your communications while simultaneously communicating with others in an effective way. There are a circle of emotional and logical facts that surround every topic or issue, be sure to stick to these points in order to convey a sense of calm and fairness that others truly admire and respect.

This type of mindfulness will increase your opportunities for success tenfold, simply by virtue of the fact that others will be drawn to connect with you and feel comfortable doing so. In so doing, you gain the invaluable respect and resource of others around you and a lifetime of growth and success.
